Write the elected school board about mask mandates

Our school board is elected. What do you think should be the rule regarding nose/mouth coverings in public schools? If you have a child or grandchild in the district run school, I hope you’ll make your voice heard. The school board doesn’t have authority over all publicly funded schools, i.e. they only have control over the district run schools.

These school board members voted for the safest option:
Elizabeth Andersen <andersene1@duvalschools.org>,
Warren A. Jones <jonesw2@duvalschools.org>,
Cynthia H. Pearson <PearsonC1@duvalschools.org>,
Darryl D. Willie <willied@duvalschools.org>,
K. Coker <cokerk@duvalschools.org>,

These school board members voted against it.
Lori O. Hershey <hersheyl@duvalschools.org>,
Charlotte D. Joyce <joycec@duvalschools.org>

An op-ed in the Jacksonville Times Union makes the case for a mask mandate in classrooms where children are too young to get the vaccine:

Duval Schools should require masks

I stand with the parents requesting that Duval County Schools require masks while a variant of COVID is currently surging. Particularly elementary schools consist almost entirely of children who are too young to be vaccinated, making them among the most vulnerable in our society.

My grandson attended an elementary school in person all of last year. While he didn’t particularly like wearing a mask, he was fine. Even the youngest can understand doing something so you won’t get sick! That’s a parent’s job — to explain the need for certain behaviors and to model consideration for others.

What parents do in their own homes is not something we can particularly control. However, exposing other people’s children and grandchildren in public schools surely should be something we can control as needed. These are unique times and all of us have had to modify our behaviors. Wearing masks in school is not going to hurt children, but the alternatives of illness and death are possibilities too important to ignore. You may not worry about your child but worry about my grandchild and other children.
