We have a First Amendment right to assemble and other thoughts about SB 484 (2021)

It’s already illegal to beat people up or steal other people’s property. SB 484 could cause someone participating in a protest to be charged with a felony or misdemeanor if someone ELSE broke the law. This link makes it easy to write your representative and ask them to vote no on SB 484 if you’re so inclined:

Quote from the link:
Protests across the country this summer were about standing up for each other and protecting life. After George Floyd was killed, everyday people were in the streets to demand real safety; money in education, mental healthcare and housing. People gave each other water, food, PPE, and affirmed that we can take care of each other if we have the resources. This summer was about making it clear that our priority is a future where people have what they need to live safe, thriving lives, and that their voices are heard. Governor Ron DeSantis told us, with an iron fist reminiscent of Bull Connor and the kind of repression faced by civil rights protesters fighting Jim Crow in the 1960s, that we cannot fight for change without life-threatening and rights-revoking repercussions. The bill would see protestors be dubbed “rioters,” charge protestors with felonies, deny them bail, and hold those who would do bodily harm to protestors free from liability. It would penalize municipalities for changes to police budgets.
