The Board of Governors is appointed and lately has been filled with allies of Govenor DeSantis who are hostile to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, (DEI) and Critical Race Theory (CRT).

HB 999 bans Florida higher education institutions from funding DEI programs, bans funding for federal or state funded organizations that focus on specific racial minorities or sexual orientations, and bans majors, minors and courses that use "critical theory." HB999 has passed the Florida House and is scheduled for a vote in the Florida Senate in May 2023. If it passes, and it seems likely, HB999 will become effective July 1, 2023.
