Is the U.S. a Democracy or a Republic?

We’re a Democracy with individual rights protected by our Constitution. Sure we elect representatives BUT they can’t act like authoritarians. The country is too big for the entire country to vote on each law. We are a Democratic Republic.

The relationship between the democratic and republican elements of this equation has been a dynamic and essential part of our history. … Despite the lack of evidence and the judgments of election officials and judges, election denialism has become a movement. And when critics call this an attack on democracy, some election deniers respond by saying the U.S. is not a democracy, it is a republic.

The newly elected House Speaker’s Christian Nationalism is dangerous. My understanding of their ideology is they want the government to fund Christian churches and the churches will provide education, social security, Medicare, etc. That didn’t work in the past and the framers were clear that we needed a separation between church and state. I am appalled that the House Republicans unanimously elected this man to be the speaker.

That line caught the attention of Kristin Kobes Du Mez, a historian who specializes in evangelical Christianity and politics. The idea that America is founded on a creed is a common one among evangelicals, and it was a sign to her that Johnson adheres to a worldview that can be described as Christian nationalist. … I talked with Du Mez about Johnson’s roots in the Christian right, the figures in that world who have shaped his understanding of American politics, and the anti-democratic turn she has watched the Christian right take in the past several years — particularly the striking way it coincided with attempts by former President Donald Trump, and Johnson himself, to overturn the 2020 election.

Mr. Johnson’s speaker term will expire before the certification of the Presidential election in January 2025. The new representatives (that we elect in 2024) will be seated before the certification. Read more about it in this article:

Excerpt from an email I received from American Atheists:

With the election of Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) as Speaker of the House, we are witnessing the erosion of our democratic values in real time. Johnson’s slick and cordial appearance in tailored suits and glasses hides a history of extremist activism and an anti-democratic congressional record. As the New York Times spells out in its profile of Johnson, he combines a staunch anti-abortion stance and virulent anti-LGBTQ rhetoric with his active participation in attempting to overturn the 2020 election.
