Humanist Imprisoned in Nigeria Needs Our Support

In 2022 Mubarak Bala, the president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for “creating a public disturbance” in online posts which allegedly insulted the Prophet Muhammad. At the time, the American Humanist Association and other groups concerned with freedom of conscience and human rights called for letters of support for Mr. Bala. In the past few weeks, the AHA has renewed its call for letters of support, as a decision concerning an appeal of this outrageous miscarriage of justice is expected by the end of May. Such letters are meant to help keep Mr. Bala’s spirits up in this difficult time. But they also demonstrate to the Nigerian authorities that he has support from around the globe, and that the eyes of the world are focused on this case.
