Dear members of the Florida House Professions & Public Health Subcommittee,
HB 5 is on your agenda for tomorrow 1/19/2021 at 1:00 p.m.

Let’s be clear: Abortion is health care.

Everyone deserves the freedom to make their own decisions about their bodies, lives, and health care – including the decision to have an abortion.  HB 5 takes that deeply personal decision away from the pregnant person and puts it in the hands of the government.

Pregnancy is not without risks. A pregnant person, their family, and their doctor must have every medical option available. Sometimes the patient is unconscious and the doctor or the family must make the decision for her. Please read the book Policing the Womb for examples of those occasions.

This bill requires two physicians to sign off on a medical exception to the ban, making it more difficult and expensive for a pregnant person to end a pregnancy, negatively impacting their health. This bill creates an unsafe and unnecessary barriers.

Whether or not to carry a fetus to term is a profoundly personal decision. No two people face the same life circumstances, therefore drawing any line other than viability per the current constitutional precedent in the United States WILL undoubtedly HARM some pregnant people.

Florida’s government should focus on supporting our residents and improving health care, not taking away their rights, especially rights that can materially impact their health, livelihoods, and futures.

Vote “NO” on this bill!
