Has changing the names of schools named after confederate soldiers become a religious issue?

Some of the footage [from the public comments made at community meetings surrounding the debate around Robert E. Lee High School’s name change] went viral, including a portion from Joey Stevens — an alumnus who said Jesus didn’t oppose slavery.

The article at the link above is about Amy who was removed from a classroom for failing to remove a Black Lives Matters flag. It appears, based on the article, that the person who complained about the flag was the guy that said Jesus doesn’t oppose slavery.

You might ask this question: How does this human interest story relate to the Humanist Affirmations? I offer you this affirmation:
Ethical values are derived from human need and interest as tested by experience. Humanists ground values in human welfare shaped by human circumstances, interests, and concerns and extended to the global ecosystem and beyond. We are committed to treating each person as having inherent worth and dignity, and to making informed choices in a context of freedom consonant with responsibility.
